A Video Editor takes unedited footage and turns it into a final product that reflects the director’s style and is ready for airing. Video Editors have to cut film sequences, add and integrate graphics and effects, and then hand in a finished project in the necessary format.
Responsibilities:
Edit various video segments so seamlessly that no one notices.
Understand the needs and specifications of the production team from a brief.
Analyze the shooting script and the raw materials to come up a wish list of scenes and their value to continuity.
Cut down segments and arrange them in the appropriate sequence.
Add any necessary audio, dialogue, music, graphics, or other effects.
Make different versions of the video to polish them to finish.
Make sure the scenes are in a logical sequence and that the video plays smoothly.
Collaborate with stakeholders during production and also during post-production.
Consistently find and capitalize on new technologies for video editing. Implement best practices in the industry to work more efficiently.
Qualifications:
One should have work experience in being a video editor.
One should have reliable experience with digital technology and editor software such as (Avid Media Composer, Lightworks, Premiere, After Effects and Final Cut)
One should have a demonstratable video editing capability with a good portfolio.
One should have full knowledge of timing, motivation, and continuity.
One should have knowledge with special effects, 3D and compositing.
One should have a creative mindset as well as skills in storytelling.
One should have a bachelor’s degree in film studies, cinematography, and or disciplines involving those fields.
Experience Necessary for a Video Editing Career:
An aspiring Video Editor usually starts their pathway by getting a degree or a certificate in film studies or something in a correlating area. While studying this, they learn the essentials for Video Editing and attain some hands-on experience with different tools for editing.
