RRB Promotions & Career Advancement:
The Railways has specific guidelines for advancement in one’s career. To move up one’s career in the Railways, there are exams and/or a selection process (based on Groups and departments). These promotions are not advertised.
RRB Group D staff can advance up the ranks to Group C after completing 3 years in the Group on a regular basis. This is promotion is by Module Examination. A service record of 15 marks is added to the 85 marks awarded for a written test.
Within Group C, promotion is carried out by Selection, or the Non-Selection method.
- Selection Positions: These are posts defined as such by the Railway Board. The senior-most employees in the subsequent lower grade are invited to the selection process.
- Non-Selection Positions: Selection Non selection posts are made on the basis of seniority, combined with the concept of suitability. Suitability is determined by means of a departmental examination/oral examination/trade examination. A senior person is turned away only when they are declared unfit.
The duties and job descriptions for different positions might change based on the needs of the department and/or Ministry.
