Key responsibilities:
- Walking the property: Conducting regular patrols of the premises helps to discourage and prevent crime and may reveal potential threats to security.
- Observation: Monitoring surveillance footage and controlling entry to the premises helps to maintain the security of the building.
Emergency Situation: During an emergency situation, the guard must stay calm and continue to do their job. They should communicate and assist law enforcement and/or emergency personnel.
Documenting: Keeping records of events, daily activities, and any unusual security concerns are critical for maintaining the security of the building, as well as documenting incidents.
Interacting with the People: Security personnel should communicate with the public and provide information with a positive and professional attitude.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Physical Requirements: Must be capable of standing for long spells of time and managing one’s self in a physically demanding environment.
- Communication: Must have good written and verbal communication skills for purposes of public engagement and incident reporting.
- Attention to Detail: Necessary to be able to notice unusual things or interferences that could be a threat.
- Problem-Solving: Must be able to think of solutions quickly in order to control or diffuse a situation.
- Education and Licensing: Must have completed state training and acquired a license to operate as a security guard.
Working Environment: Depending on company or event needs, Security guards work at company office buildings, shops, residential buildings, and outside public events. You may have to work outside normal hours, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
Career Opportunities:
